Lessons Learned (365:108)

This shot is grainy because I had to push a very dark shot to get anything usable and I still ended up with “bird butt”. Aside from the fact that this is my first shot of an osprey, I am sharing it because it getting the opportunity for the shot was an important lesson in keeping my “eyes to the sky” to scan for birds.

I’ve gotten much better at sorting out raptors from ravens/crows by their silhouettes. This fellow flew in overhead while I was driving and I knew he was a hunting raptor. My eyes followed him to a lone tree in the distance where he set up to rest and scan the ground.

As soon as my tripod was set, I fired off a couple of test shots which ended up being too dark to recover. As I was tweaking my settings, he took flight and I got this shot, such as it is. He dropped over a mountain and did not return.

Still, it was a good indication that my spotting skills are developing and I am getting closer to some really great shots.
